Chapter 11

Angela sat at her desk, staring at the list of suspects and tapping her pen against her chin. After a moment, she picked up the phone and dialed the police station.

“Hey, Troy, it’s Angela,” she said when the desk sergeant picked up after the second ring. “I need to speak to Chief Helbar, please.”

There was a gruff mumble on the other end of the line, and then the Chief’s voice cut through. “What do you want, Angela? I’m a busy man.”

“Hello to you too, Chief,” Angela said, trying to smother a rueful laugh. “I just have a quick question for you. What kind of tools would be needed to tamper with the locks in that room where Kyle was found? I’m trying to narrow down our list of suspects and see if the murder and the recent animal escapade are connected.”

There was a brief pause, and then the Chief grumbled, “I’ll have one of the boys look into it and get back to you.”

“Thank you,” Angela said.

It didn’t take long before he called back.

“Most likely, someone would have used a set of lock picks or similar tools to get through those locks,” he said. “None of the locks at the carnival are special ordered or anything, but lock-picking requires skill and precision.”

“Got it,” Angela said, jotting down a few notes. “And Chief, did anyone at the carnival mention having access to something like that?”

After a moment of reluctant silence, the Chief harrumphed. “That animal trainer, what’s her name.... Sawyer Barnett. She’s known to carry a set of lock picks with her for the animal enclosures, just in case the keys ever get misplaced.”

Angela furrowed her brow. “Sawyer, huh? That makes sense. Thanks, Chief. I’ll be in touch.”

She hung up the phone and chewed on the end of her pen. “Sawyer seems like a good lead,” she mused, looking down at her faithful companion. Ruff cocked his head and let out a small woof.

She pulled up the security footage on her computer and watched it again, paying close attention to Sawyer’s actions. After a few loops, she sighed. “I don’t see anything that directly incriminates her,” she muttered. “She’s just doing her job. Besides, the person in the shadows is too tall to match her silhouette.”

Angela made a mental note to interview Sawyer again about her relationship to Kyle before turning her attention back to the list of suspects. She highlighted Malcolm and Ian’s names, though Malcolm seemed to love the carnival far too much to sabotage it. Just as she was about to dig deeper, Angela’s phone buzzed with a text from Kim. It was a reminder about another staff meeting—this one orchestrated by Malcolm to go over safety protocol.

“Thanks, girl,” Angela said with a grin. “Ruff, it looks like we’re taking a trip back to the carnival. Maybe being back on the scene will jog something loose.”

Angela gathered her things and locked up the office before heading out.
